What is Stamp Duty?
Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is a tax you may be required to pay to HMRC when purchasing land or property in the UK and Northern Ireland.
How much is Stamp Duty?
The amount of Stamp Duty that you pay depends on where you are purchasing, how much you are purchasing for, and the type of buyer you are. Our calculator below can indicate how much you should expect to pay when purchasing in England and Northern Ireland.
When is Stamp Duty payable?
If Stamp Duty is payable, HMRC requires you to pay within 14 days (England & Northern Ireland) or 30 days (Scotland & Wales) after completing the transaction. Failure to pay in time may result in a fine; however, your conveyancer/solicitor would usually collect this from you before completing the transaction and make the payment on your behalf.
